QUALIFICATIONS
Mr. Steussy has acquired over 25 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and geophysics on a broad spectrum of projects, both onshore and marine, in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Louisiana, and Virginia. Specific projects he has worked on have included residential and commercial building distress investigations, landslide and slope movement investigations, management of grading and construction observation projects, overall site evaluations of proposed industrial/residential developments, land and marine soil sampling programs, and design of coastal protection measures. He has been involved in the design of deep foundations for bridges and offshore oil platforms, and has designed, constructed, and utilized instrumentation systems for assessing soil and foundation behavior. He has participated in research to assess liquefaction potential of soils by in-place testing of a site damaged in a major earthquake. He has also been involved in major field tests of instrumented pile foundations, modeling conditions of earthquakes and storm wave loading. Mr. Steussy has authored or co-authored over 300 proprietary reports of geotechnical investigations and observations.
Mr. Steussy has testified and/or has been designated as a geotechnical expert in over 200 court cases involving litigation of construction defects. These cases have involved design and construction of foundations and slabs, differential movement of constructed facilities, soil subsidence, soil expansion, soil moisture, ground water, landslides and slope stability, soil-concrete interaction, concrete and reinforcement deterioration, seismic design, earth retaining structures, deep foundations, slab moisture intrusion and moisture barriers, and standard of care in geotechnical engineering and construction. The clients Mr. Steussy has been retained by in these cases have generally been split evenly between defendants and plaintiffs.
Mr. Steussy is also a trained mediator with and board member of the National Conflict Resolution Center (formerly the San Diego Mediation Center). He has been president of the San Diego Chapter of the Society for Professionals in Dispute Resolution (SPIDR) and chairman of the San Diego Dispute Resolution Forum. In 1992, Mr. Steussy helped initiate the San Diego Mediation Center's committee that established credentialing procedures for mediators. He has been a panelist/instructor in large group and Superior Court mediator training courses, has moderated panels and roundtable discussions on alternative methods for handling construction defect cases, and has chaired workshops addressing confidentiality in mediation and the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution in international trade disputes.
